A team of researchers at the University of Wisconsin, Stout, conducted a study which illustrates just how beneficial meditation exercises can be for the mind and body.
In a trial, volunteers were instructed to sit with their eyes closed, focusing on their breath as it passed the tips of their noses. If a thought were to cross their mind, the participants were told to note its occurrence but return the consciousness to the breath.
After the individuals completed seven hours of meditation techniques, the investigators conducted brain imaging techniques and determined that the mind-body exercise was effective in making the mind more responsive.
"I think this implies that meditation is likely to create a shift in outlook toward life. It has really worked for me," said researcher Jane Anderson.
Author and philosopher Ilchi Lee believes that exercises like meditation are important parts of strengthening the mind, body and spirit. Practices that aim to improve all aspects of an individual are key to growth, development and fulfillment, according to Lee.
