In a review of 35 studies that examined the benefits of the ancient martial art tai chi, researchers at the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine and the University of Exeter found that the practice helps to prevent falls and cognitive decline in individuals as they age.

Moreover, there was significant evidence that tai chi may also improve strength and flexibility as well as increase a person's aerobic capacity.

"Our overview showed that tai chi, which combines deep breathing and relaxation with slow and gentle movements, may exert exercise-based general benefits for fall prevention and improvement of balance in older people as well as some meditative effects for improving psychological health," said study authors.

Philosopher and lifestyle expert Ilchi Lee has been practicing tai chi and yoga for years, and recommends both practices as a way to align the body, mind and spirit.

He says that enlightenment is possible through a strong connection between these aspects, and that it is up to the individual to take the initiative to better themselves through such means.
