In a study of more than 170 postmenopausal women, researchers at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center have found that the combination of green tea consumption and tai chi may have significant benefits in strengthening bones, reducing inflammation and easing emotional or mental stress.

To conduct the research, the team of scientists conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, intervention trial. The participants were divided into four groups: one that took a placebo, a second that took a pill containing green tea antioxidants, a third that consumed a starch pill and practiced the martial art and a fourth that ingested tea polyphenols and took part in tai chi.

While both green tea and tai chi appeared to have separate benefits, the researchers found that the best results were reaped when the two were combined.

Author and philosopher Ilchi Lee believes that optimal health is part of the path to enlightenment and growth. Any journey must begin with a healthy body and mind, and the ancient Korean traditions of tai chi and green tea may help individuals achieve this.
